The European Union’s executive body on Thursday said it is launching a consultation on a potential plan to make digital companies contribute to investments in telecommunications networks.
The European Commission said it is gathering views on the future of the telecoms sector as it seeks to identify the types of infrastructure needed in the coming years and on how to mobilize the required investments timely. The commission said the exploratory consultation is part of a dialogue with all interested parties about the potential need for digital players to invest in connectivity infrastructure.
The consultation will also look at how to make the connectivity sector more integrated across the EU, the commission said.
The process will remain open until May 19, and the commission will then decide on its next steps, it said.
