Dow ekes out another record as stocks end mixed

Stocks put in a mixed performance Wednesday, with the Dow Jones Industrial Average eking out another record close, lifted by gains for shares of Verizon Communications Inc. and Chevron Corp. after Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. revealed it had taken stakes in both companies last quarter. The Dow rose around 92 points, or 0.3%, to finish near 31,614, according to preliminary figures. In a regulatory filing late Tuesday, Berkshire said it had a new stake of 146.7 million shares in Verizon as of Dec. 31, and a new 48.5 million share stake in Chevron Verizon was the top gainer in the blue-chip gauge on Wednesday, with a rise of 5.2%, followed by Chevron, up 3%. The S&P 500 meanwhile, fell around 1 point, or less than 0.1%, to close near 3,931, while the Nasdaq slipped around 82 points, or 0.6%, to end near 13,965..
