This past year has driven one point home like never before: Health is the true wealth. While family comes a close second, we cannot enjoy our time with our loved ones if we don’t keep ourselves healthy. That said, ensuring that we maintain good health is a secure investment to ensure a bright future, isn’t it?

Global Perspective

The World Health Organisation (WHO), way back in 2007, came up with their report – Invest In Health For A Secure Future – which goes to show that experts across the globe were inadvertently trying to prepare us. The report stated the importance of global public health security by saying it “minimizes vulnerability to acute public health events that endanger the collective health of populations living across geographical regions and international boundaries, and includes the impact on economic, political stability, trade, tourism, access to goods and services and demographic stability.” The pandemic showed how important public health security is, and why all nations need to get their citizens covered with proper medical infrastructure, accessibility, etc. The report also noted that “no single country, regardless of capability or wealth, can protect itself from outbreaks and other hazards without the cooperation of others” so working together in a systematic, collaborative way is the way forward.

On A Personal Note

Ensuring health security for the country’s citizens as a whole comes under the government, but all of us need to do our bit too, towards a health-secured future… This not only benefits the world as a whole, but we are the biggest benefactors of good health practices. Staying healthy has multiple benefits for individuals…

  • Live long: Good health increases longevity.
  • Feel good: A healthy lifestyle gives you self-confidence and self-belief.
  • Helps control stress: A healthy you equals less stress and anxiety!
  • Lowers medical costs: The medical costs related to your health – check-ups, medicines, insurances, etc. – are reduced considerably.

Invest Right

Precaution is always better than cure, and if you invest in your health in time, you can ensure that you have a safe and happy future. Here are some ways that you can do so…

Research and educate: Understanding what is needed for you to remain healthy. This is not just the diet and exercise you need for your body shape, weight-putting tendencies or metabolism, it is also about your medical history. Knowing if you have any family history of illnesses can help you take due precautions. Also, doing regular check-ups and testing will keep you updated with the changing needs of yourself.

Habits and routines: Keeping good eating habits is the easiest way to ensure you keep healthy. Fix a fitness routine – depending on your interest, needs and situation – that works for you, and that you can do regularly.

Sleep and hydrate: Ensuring you get the right amount of sleep daily, will keep you refreshed every day and it also helps reduce heart diseases, rests and recharges organs, helps decrease obesity, etc. Drinking enough water also has many health benefits like balancing body fluids, aiding weight loss, helping kidneys, etc.

Mindfulness and moderation: Be mindful in whatever you do. Try and stay in the present rather than overthinking the past or fantasising about the future. That will help you keep your mind here and now, helping reduce stress. Another way to do the same is by practising moderation. Excess of even the good things – be it in food, fitness, etc – can result in problems.

Being social and positive: Keeping connected with family and friends – be it in-person or virtually – can help keep away loneliness and resulting anxiety. Find ways to stay in regular touch with the people you love and build a strong support system for yourself. Ensure you keep thinking positive thoughts and if other types of thoughts try and intrude, divert your mind by either talking to someone, listening to music or doing anything else you like.
