Beginner's guide to the keto diet

The keto, or ketogenic diet focuses on eating lots of high-fat foods, moderate amounts of protein and little to no carbohydrates and sugars. The high-fat content seems to tamp down hunger pangs in dieters, which makes a keto regime easier to maintain than most other diets. Jason Ewoldt, RDN, LD, a wellness dietitian at the Mayo Clinic, says that in a true keto diet, 60%-80% of calories should come from fat, and you should eat only a small amount of protein and less than 50 grams of carbohydrates per day. Compare this to the average American diet which consists of at least 50% carbohydrates and you begin to see how this change can force drastic results.
