8 Celebrities Who Have Spoken about Their Experience with IBS and Gut Issues

Since it’s so common, we’re guessing you’re already somewhat familiar with IBS: (irritable bowel syndrome) a functional disorder affecting the gut. This means that, although there is no abnormality in structure, there is a problem with a function of the gut. IBS is diagnosed by the recurring symptoms it often presents with: intermittent tummy pain accompanied by diarrhoea, constipation, or alternating episodes of both.

The precise cause is unknown, but IBS has been linked to stress, oversensitive nerves in your gut, food passing through your gut too quickly and a family history of the condition. There is no cure, as such, but the condition can be managed with lifestyle tweaks such as identifying the foods that do and do not trigger you and stress reduction techniques such as yoga, as well as some medications.

Eleven per cent of the global population deal with the condition, while here in the UK it’s thought that one in 10 people do. Yet, despite how ubiquitous it is, there is no easy diagnostic test to confirm the problem.

While IBS is super prevelant – due to its very nature – it’s not something you often hear celebrities talking about. However, there are some who have spoken about the condition so many of us suffer with. 1 Malin Andersson

Former Love Island star, Malin Andersson, spoke about her journey with IBS on Instagram, writing: ‘I developed IBS in my teenage years, after struggling with my self image I abused laxatives to empty out my body.

‘I remember waking up each day with awful cramps and having to go toilet just so I could “look and feel skinnier,” I now suffer in my adult life and struggle to eat gluten and other types of food that make my tummy sensitive.’

2 Tyra Banks

Tyra Banks spoke about suffering with IBS back in 2006 on The Tyra Show. She revealed she is ‘very gassy’ and follows a low FODMAP diet to keep her symptoms under control.

3 Kirsten Dunst

Another celebrity who’s an advocate for following a low-FODMAP diet is Kirsten Dunst. She has openly spoken about her IBS and the negative effect it has on her self esteem and anxiety. In fact, in 2006 Dunst spoke about how she believes that her IBS can be a direct connection to her depression and anxiety.

4 Catherine Tyldesley

Coronation Street actress Catherine Tyldesley has shared her experience with IBS online many times. She shared a photo to Instagram showcasing her bloated stomach, and wrote on Twitter about how junk food makes her ‘body rebel’, resulting in ‘bad skin, lethargy, heartburn, IBS and insomnia’.

5 Alexandra Cane

Love Island’s Alexandra Cane spoke about her IBS diagnosis on Instagram. ‘So I’ve suffered with bloating for many years on and off. Initially, when I first got diagnosed with IBS I was given Buscopan & told to see how I get on. I refused to take them. I wasn’t satisfied with the response I got and decided to get to the root of the problem. I did this through looking at what I was consuming. WE ARE WHAT WE EAT.’

One of pop’s living legends suffered from IBS symptoms for years, before finding a diet that worked for her to manage the issue, as well as getting into stress-relieving practices such as yoga.

7 Lucy Mecklenburgh

While not an IBS diagnosis, Lucy Mecklenburgh shared her experience with a common symptom of the issue, bloating, via Instagram, explaining that while she sticks to a balanced diet and exercises 3-4 times a week, she has been suffering with bloating for over 10 years.

‘I’ve never shared it with anyone maybe because i thought it looks bad as I have a health and fitness business and it didn’t make me a good advert for my business but actually I really wish I had as it doesn’t make me unfit or unhealthy it MAKES ME HUMAN! I know certain foods that trigger it and I’m more prone to it on holiday as I’m more relaxed with what I’m eating but this means I pack alot of kaftans and floaty dresses on in my suitcase!!

‘I know pasta, bread, dairy products, greasy fast food, alcohol, onions and raw veg causes me to become bloated (I worked this out myself through years or keeping food diaries & logging when I was bloated) but honestly somethings IM LIKE WTF AM I ALLERGIC TO F****** WATER. It happens randomly and I’m sooooo uncomfortable and makes me want to veg out on the sofa in One of Ryan’s trackies and do nothing.

‘So I’m making a promise now to all of my followers that I will be more open and honest and not always show the ‘good’ ‘happy’ ‘perfect’ parts of me & my life.’

8 Zara McDermott

Zara McDermott again has not been diagnosed with IBS, but has shared about her problems with bloating. The former Love Island star took to Instagram to showcase her bloating throughout the day with two side-by-side pictures of herself.

‘The first pic I took THIS MORNING at 8am when I’d just woke up! The second pic was at 8:30pm. How much a body can change in the space of a few hours is WILD! This pic doesn’t do it justice of how bad my bloating can get! I suffer badly with bloating, as I am quite intolerant to meat and eggs. I also find that fruit bloats me a lot too. I don’t get any other symptoms, however, other than just the bloating.

‘I just wanted to show you guys that my body isn’t always as sculpted and hourglass as it looks online.’
