This is the second part in a column about how diet relates to mental health. It is a continuation of a health column that ran June 4.

When compared to the traditional “Western” diet, eating habits like a Japanese or Mediterranean diet seem to be much better for mental health. In fact, these healthier eating styles have shown a 25-35% lower risk for depression. What is different about them?
