VERMILION COUNTY, Ill. (WCIA) — The yearly jobs report is out from the State of Illinois — and a Vermilion County city has some room to grow.
Danville saw one of the largest unemployment increases for metro areas from last year to this year. Danville is down 500 non-farm jobs from October 2023, adding up to a 1.8% job decline.
Vermilion Advantage President Mike Marron says he isn’t too surprised by those numbers. The Quaker Oats plant closure earlier this year is partially to blame.

More than 510 people were laid off. The report shows Danville saw unemployment rise from 5.8% in 2023 to 6.2% this year. Marron says the city will continue to work on solutions in the next year.
“Vermilion Advantage is working closely with the City of Danville and with Vermilion County. And so you’ve got everybody working hard together in the right direction. I think we’ve got a solid plan, and we’ve got the support of a lot of our elected officials, both on the state and federal level. I think we’ve got a good team together, and we’re going to move forward. You’re going to see some good stuff happen,” says Marron.
Marron says the city is waiting to hear back on a state grant application. If selected, the city would hire a consultant to analyze the local economy. He says a full report would enable city officials to make data-backed plans to address these issues in the smartest way possible.
