MIDLAND, MI — The viral conversation generated by a woman discovered living in a supermarket sign here provides an opportunity to shed a public light on larger issues surrounding housing challenges in the region, said an expert on the matter.

Police last month discovered a woman living inside the Family Fare supermarket parking lot sign, where her living quarters included a desk, houseplant, computer printer, Keurig coffeemaker and food. Officials determined the woman, in her mid-30s, lived there for about a year.
