Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Basic Materials, Consumer Goods and Industrials sectors propelled shares higher.
At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average gained 0.43% to hit a new 3-month high, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.69%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.83%.
The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which rose 3.17% or 7.54 points to trade at 245.44 at the close. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) added 2.59% or 1.34 points to end at 53.14 and Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC) was up 2.54% or 0.84 points to 33.91 in late trade.
Load Error
Biggest losers included Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM), which lost 2.20% or 4.71 points to trade at 208.98 in late trade. Visa Inc Class A (NYSE:V) declined 1.22% or 2.77 points to end at 223.40 and Boeing Co (NYSE:BA) shed 0.53% or 1.18 points to 220.38.
The top performers on the S&P 500 were Comerica Inc (NYSE:CMA) which rose 6.39% to 43.65, Steel Dynamics Inc (NASDAQ:STLD) which was up 5.99% to settle at 107.10 and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd (NYSE:NCLH) which gained 5.76% to close at 19.47.
The worst performers were Advanced Micro Devices Inc (NASDAQ:AMD) which was down 3.64% to 124.49 in late trade, Biogen Inc (NASDAQ:BIIB) which lost 2.81% to settle at 304.60 and Bio-Techne Corp (NASDAQ:TECH) which was down 2.45% to 76.73 at the close.
The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were IperionX Limited ADR (NASDAQ:IPX) which rose 99.10% to 13.21, Eastside Distilling Inc (NASDAQ:EAST) which was up 81.10% to settle at 6.23 and Ideanomics Inc (NASDAQ:IDEX) which gained 46.35% to close at 0.09.
The worst performers were Auddia Inc (NASDAQ:AUUD) which was down 48.85% to 0.62 in late trade, Advanced Human Imaging Ltd ADR (NASDAQ:AHI) which lost 37.50% to settle at 1.50 and Jin Medical International Ltd (NASDAQ:ZJYL) which was down 30.98% to 9.11 at the close.
Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 2077 to 905 and 106 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 2324 rose and 1252 declined, while 147 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.
The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 2.66% to 14.61.
In commodities trading, Gold Futures for August delivery was down 0.67% or 13.25 to $1,956.45 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in July rose 3.02% or 2.03 to hit $69.15 a barrel, while the August Brent oil contract rose 3.03% or 2.18 to trade at $74.02 a barrel.
EUR/USD was unchanged 0.33% to 1.08, while USD/JPY rose 0.42% to 140.19.
The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.35% at 102.86.
