Costco has entered into the weight-loss drug market, selling well-known medications such as Wegovy and Ozempic at discounted prices.
The move is part of a partnership between the wholesale warehouse, and Novo Nordisk, the Danish pharmaceutical company behind the popular drugs.
“By partnering with one of the country’s most trusted retailers, we are meeting people where they are and connecting them to real, FDA-approved medicines in our premium pen devices,” said Dave Moore the EVP of U.S. Operations at Novo Nordisk.
Wegovy and Ozempic are both GLP-1 drugs (glucagon-like peptide-1), and were originally prescribed to treat diabetes and heart disease. In recent years, they have been found to suppress appetite, target obesity and promote weight loss.
Although their popularity has grown, they are still some of the most expensive prescriptions on the market, with Wegovy’s list price at $1,349 a month. Insurance isn’t helping either — according to USA Today, in 2024, only 44% of large employers covered GLP-1 drugs for obesity. This also comes at a time when medical spas and telehealth companies are marketing compounded, unregulated versions of these drugs despite FDA restrictions.
Costco’s sale of these drugs is increasing accessibility, while putting pressure on competitors to lower prices.
Wegovy and Ozempic are now available to Costco members, with executive members and Costco Citibank Visa cardholders receiving an additional 2% discount.
GoodRx and NovoCare Pharmacy also offer the drugs for $499/month, with direct shipping to customers homes.
