Veterans Day, honoring those who have served in the US Armed Forces, falls on Tuesday, November 11, 2025. The federal holiday is observed nationwide each year on November 11, the date marking the end of World War I in 1918, though many businesses will continue operating on regular schedules.
This year’s observance comes during an ongoing federal government shutdown, which has forced the cancellation or scaling back of some Veterans Day parades and ceremonies across the country. Still, major commemorations such as the annual observance at Arlington National Cemetery and the New York City Veterans Day Parade are expected to go ahead as planned.
According to the US Department of Veterans Affairs, the holiday is meant to celebrate “America’s veterans for their patriotism, love of country, and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.”

Why Veterans Day Falls on November 11
Veterans Day traces its origins to the armistice that ended World War I, which took effect on November 11, 1918, at the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Originally known as Armistice Day, it became a federal holiday in 1938. In 1954, after World War II and the Korean War, Congress renamed it Veterans Day to honor all American veterans who have served in the nation’s armed forces.
Despite the disruptions caused by this year’s shutdown, Americans across the country are expected to pause on November 11 to honor those who have served and sacrificed for the United States.
