Amid Canada’s national housing crisis, people with developmental and intellectual disabilities often face an especially gruelling task finding adequate homes.

“With over 3,000 individuals with diverse abilities on wait-lists in York Region alone, and thousands more across Ontario, the need for inclusive, supportive housing has never been more urgent. Some people have spent their entire lives waiting,” said Andrew Fagan, executive director of Community Living Central York, which serves clients from Newmarket, Aurora, East Gwillimbury, Whitchurch-Stouffville and King Township.

Kathy Rogerson has struggled for years to find affordable, safe housing, She will soon move into Community Living Central York’s new 17-unit building in Newmarket.
