PRINCETON, W.Va. (WVVA) – Losing weight and exercising more are among the most popular New Year’s resolutions, and fitness experts say starting simple is key to success.

Billie Vicentino, operations director at Princeton Health and Fitness Center and certified personal trainer, said walking is one of the best ways to begin a fitness journey.

“Basic exercise is always walking,” Vicentino said. “Walking is the way to go. Get your heart rate up. Even at 15 minutes of that, it’s the simplest thing to get you started.”

Multiple walking options available

Walking offers flexibility as an exercise option. People can walk outside on tracks or trails, walk on indoor tracks at gymnasiums, use treadmills or try other types of machines.

The American Heart Association recommends exercising at a heart rate between 50 and 85 percent of your projected maximum heart rate. Information on calculating maximum heart rate and target heart rates is available on the American Heart Association’s website.

Diet changes support weight loss

Vicentino said changing your diet can help with weight loss goals.

“Diet goes a long way,” Vicentino said. “They always say it starts in the kitchen and that is true. So, even just adding some higher protein values; your tunas, your chicken, your fish elements, that always helps. Always adding greens. Anytime that you eat you should have something green on your plate.”

Other high protein foods include beans, peas and lentils, nuts and seeds, and dairy products. Green foods include leafy greens, cruciferous vegetables like broccoli and cabbage, and other fruits like cucumbers and avocados.

Gym advice for beginners

For those planning to join a gym, Vicentino recommends approaching the experience with an open mind and focusing on enjoyment.

“Everyone has started somewhere,” Vicentino said. “Don’t be afraid to ask the questions. And we’re here to help you on that journey.”
