A flood of social media advertisements for New Year weight-loss treatments has alarmed doctors and regulators who say drug companies are exploiting grey areas in rules which ban direct advertising of prescription medicines as demand for blockbuster drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro soars.

Ads for digital healthcare companies offering weight loss plans that include drugs known as GLP-1s have surged on Instagram, Facebook and other social media feeds in Australia in January, when many people make resolutions to slim down.
