A top doctor has shed light on the benefits of incorporating foods like chicken breast and tofu into your diet for those looking to slim down.
Professor Franklin Joseph from Dr Frank’s Weight Loss Clinic highlights that lean proteins such as these can keep you feeling full for an extended period and “maintains muscle mass during weight loss”.
He also recommends a high-fibre diet with plenty of vegetables, legumes, and whole grains to stave off hunger pangs. He told Reach PLC: “Incorporating these into your diet will slow digestion and reduce cravings.”
For those who find sugary drinks a stumbling block in their weight loss journey, Professor Joseph suggests green tea and water as superior alternatives. Green tea, in particular, is lauded by him as “a standout” for its metabolism-boosting and fat-burning antioxidants, Surrey Live reports.
However, water remains the ultimate choice, with the professor claiming that even just one glass before a meal can help curb overeating. He explained: “Staying hydrated not only supports overall health but also reduces unnecessary snacking.
“In fact, drinking a glass of water before meals can prevent overeating by making you feel fuller faster”.
Professor Joseph also advises making minor tweaks to your diet to aid weight loss. Simple swaps could include opting for olive oil and vinegar over creamy salad dressings, choosing air-popped popcorn instead of crisps, selecting sparkling water with lemon rather than sugary fizzy drinks, and picking wholegrain carbohydrates over white varieties.
How is tofu good for weight loss?
Tofu, a complete plant protein and a rich source of monounsaturated and polyunsaturated fats, is not a weight loss miracle, but it can help prevent obesity and other metabolic diseases by decreasing body fat and increasing lean body mass, according to nutrition consultant William Read.
According to Weight Watchers, tofu is also cholesterol-free and low in fat. In addition to this, it provides a good source of calcium, manganese, iron, selenium, copper, zinc, and phosphorus. The website describes tofu as “an effective weight-loss tool” for many reasons including its high level of protein keeping you fuller for longer.
It adds that at two grams of carbs and nine grams of protein per serving, the meat-alternative has a high protein-to-carb ratio, making it a good substitute.
