A $7 million federal grant could give a boost to affordable housing in Tucson, officials say.

The US Department of Housing and Urban Development grant to the city and county’s joint housing initiative will be used for “regulatory reforms that facilitate more housing in low poverty and high opportunity locations” by way of changes to zoning codes and impact fee subsidies. It also will provide gap-funding for developments, the city and county said Tuesday in a news release.

Some of the grant funding will go toward providing funding and technical assistance to help build tiny homes, middle housing and housing developments on city-owned parcels, the release says.

“Cities are innovating to create housing affordability,” Mayor Regina Romero said in a news release.

It is “morally imperative that we improve access for low-income families to many of the opportunities afforded to families in higher income neighborhoods,” Rex Scott, chair of the Pima County Board of Supervisors, said in the same news release. “This is an excellent example of the city, county and federal governments working together to address the affordable housing crisis and reduce generational poverty in an evidence-based manner.”

The grant to the local housing initiative is the maximum amount possible through the federal program grant, according to the release. It is slated to last through September 2030.
