But in a matter of months, the doors will be closed for good.
The Daily Bread was already making the transition from an outreach center to an affordable housing community.
The City of Melbourne has asked the non-profit to accelerate the process.

Daily Bread Executive Director Jeff Njus said, “We have been planning a transformation to be more housing-focused.
We expected that transformation to take the next couple of years while we prepared to build Providence Place, a 119-unit development for people coming out of homelessness, but a place to serve people in housing, which we know is the real solution to homelessness.”
Providence Place will be built on Apollo Boulevard. Melbourne Mayor Paul Alfrey says homeless services won’t be provided at the housing community.

He added, “We’re in a crisis in this country. And it comes down to whether you want to call it transitional housing, affordable housing, or workforce housing.
But we need some kind of program that’s going to help people get back on their feet to help turn the high rent and really establish any kind of need that they have.
“Both the Daily Bread and the future Providence Place are in the district of Vice Mayor David Neuman. He told us he envisions a separate centralized area in the city for centralized services. He told us, “I want to coordinate with nonprofits to be on or next to that property so they’re able to have a central. We can take homeless people who are unhoused, go put them there, get services, whether it’s career source, whether it’s food, whether it’s any types of trainings or things that they need in order to get on their feet.”
