LOUISVILLE, Ky. (WKRC) – Patients using popular weight loss medications, such as Ozempic and Wegovy, are being urged to undergo regular eye examinations due to a potential risk of vision loss. Medical reporter Liz Bonis highlighted that while vision loss is not a common complication, it has been associated with GLP-1 agonists, including semaglutide.
Amber Mehle, a nurse practitioner at Kentucky’s Dermalounge, shared her experience with the medication. “I not only lost weight on the medication, but I also now counsel patients on managing diet, exercise levels, and side effects of the drugs as part of a comprehensive weight management program,” she said.
A recent study published in JAMA Ophthalmology suggests that some patients may experience vision changes linked to a condition known as nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION). Dr. Jennifer Mercado, an optometrist at Kentucky’s Vision One, explained that these blood flow changes can lead to partial vision loss in one or both eyes, which is likely permanent.
Dr. Mercado advised, “If you notice any vision change on any medication, see an eye doctor right away. There does not appear to be a treatment for this type of vision loss, but waiting may make it worse.”
Research is ongoing to further understand the association between these medications and vision loss.
