Many businesses will be opening their doors for sales on Black Friday, and the stock market is no different.
Thanksgiving happens annually on the fourth Thursday of November, and Black Friday follows the next day. The New York Stock Exchange always observes Thanksgiving and closes all markets, as it is a federal holiday.
However, the NYSE does not determine the cryptocurrency market, which functions on a separate calendar, allowing for more trading to continue throughout holiday hours. The NYSE will alter its hours for the holiday, and here’s how that will affect trading over Thanksgiving.
The NYSE and Nasdaq are open traditionally for trading from 8:30 CT to 4 p.m. on Monday through Friday. The two markets will observe Thanksgiving and close all stock market trading on the Thursday.
The markets are routinely closed on weekends and the 10 federal holidays: New Year’s Day, Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Presidents’ Day (NYSE calls it Washington’s Birthday), Good Friday, Memorial Day, Juneteenth, Independence Day, Labor Day, Thanksgiving Day, and Christmas Day.
Cryptocurrency markets, however, remain open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. Trading crypto exchanges like Ethereum and Bitcoin will be available on Thanksgiving.
The stock market will be open on Friday, Nov. 28, 2025. However, the NYSE will have an early close for the holiday. After opening at 8 a.m. CT, all stock markets will close at noon in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday.
Bond markets typically trade from 8 a.m. ET to 5 p.m. ET.
Commodity futures markets, like the Chicago Mercantile Exchange (CME) and Intercontinental Exchange (ICE), operate on modified schedules between Nov. 27-29 (Thanksgiving and Black Friday). Check the schedules as some commodities may observe early closures.
