U.S. stocks opened higher on Monday as investors continued to ignore the government shutdown, sending the Dow and S&P 500 toward their longest winning streak since May.

The S&P 500 was up 21 points, or 0.3%, at 6,736.

The Nasdaq Composite was up 105 points, or 0.5%, at 22,880.

The Dow was up 85 points, or 0.2%, at 46,840.

“October got off to a bullish start as traders looked past the government shutdown and the economic data vacuum it created,” said Chris Larkin, managing director of trading and investing at E-Trade from Morgan Stanley, in commentary shared with MarketWatch.

“Although earnings season doesn’t really get underway until next week, traders may take their cues this week from the handful of companies reporting [third-quarter] numbers, along with any comments [Federal Reserve Chair] Jerome Powell and other Fed members make at their speaking engagements,” he said.
