At a press conference last week, Treasurer Jim Chalmers said, “We are well placed, and we are well prepared to do what we can to make our economy more productive and our budget more sustainable over time.” But the treasurer’s optimism belies the challenges weighing on Australia’s economic outlook.
The reality is closer to a bad rerun of the 1970s when a second-rate, over-regulated and overprotected economy was steered by a Whitlam Labor government renowned for profligacy.
