A 2019 AARP study found that Additional Housing Units, or ADUs, were hundreds of dollars cheaper than their one bedroom counterparts in 7 cities across the city, and that they provided an alternative to nursing homes, allowing seniors to age in place. A pilot project designed to show the effectiveness of legalizing ADU’s in Chicago has still not led to repealing the ban on these units.
