The Albany Common Council has passed an ordinance focused on addressing what local leaders say is a housing crisis.

The new law legalizes and regulates the construction of accessory dwelling units, or ADUs. Those are defined as any housing unit which is built on the same lot as an existing home.

According to the council, Albany needs 56% more housing now than it did in 1960.

Supporters said ADUs allow for more flexibility when it comes to building new, affordable rentals in all neighborhoods.
