A nearly 6-acre lot on Santa Fe’s south side will become home to dozens of affordable housing units as part of a project greenlighted Thursday by the city Planning Commission.
Construction of the 119,540-square-foot project of 84 units at 1111 Ocate Road was approved by the Planning Commission on Thursday, after some debate on plans for a sidewalk near the development. The Civic Housing Authority, an independent nonprofit that aims to address the city’s housing affordability crisis, is the project developer.
The median price of a single-family home in the city of Santa Fe in the first quarter of 2025 was $570,000, according to a report by the Santa Fe Association of Realtors; in the county, the number is even higher. Affordable housing in the city has emerged as a central issue in the upcoming November election, with a coalition of local organizations asking mayoral and City Council candidates to commit to specific policy plans to address the problem and spur development.
