SANFORD (WGME) – As Maine battles a housing crisis, a nonprofit is doing its part to create more housing with a special purpose.
Waypoint announced Thursday it’s building new housing for individuals with intellectual disabilities and complex medical needs in Sanford.
The organization says the home is fully accessible and designed to offer residents a modern, supportive environment.
Leaders say their mission is to improve the quality of life for individuals with special needs in the community.
“We feel really strongly that people with intellectual disabilities and physical disabilities be a part of our community here in Sanford, and we’re trying to make that happen, and we really appreciate the local neighborhood as well as our community for helping us do that,” Waypoint Executive Director Jennifer Putnam said.
The home will have six bedrooms and three bathrooms and will include communal and quiet spaces for residents to relax and socialize.
The project is expected to be completed in May.
