Housing Minister Clare O’Neil has promised to slash red tape to kick-start home building and reverse a multi-decade collapse in the construction industry’s productivity, as she says the sector has turned a corner after a tough few years of rising costs and surging insolvencies.
Housing was a major battleground during the federal election campaign, where Prime Minister Anthony Albanese sought to woo young voters with a promise to allow virtually all first home buyers to enter the property market with a 5 per cent deposit from January 1, as well as build 100,000 homes exclusively for them.
