SABAK BERNAM, June 9 (Bernama) — The Selangor state government has announced two large-scale fisheries projects in the Sabak Bernam region that are expected to attract about RM600 million in investments and create more than 7,000 job opportunities within 10 years.
Menteri Besar Selangor (Incorporated) (MBI) said these projects are part of the Sabak Bernam Development Area (SABDA) initiative to achieve long-term food security goals for a sufficient and reliable supply of staple foods to meet domestic market needs.
The projects are the development of Malaysia’s first tuna and deep-sea fish processing and packaging plant as well as the first integrated fish landing port in Sekinchan, MBI said in a statement in conjunction with the SABDA Introduction Programme officiated by Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari here today.
For the development of the plant, MBI today signed a memorandum of understanding with leading seafood company Alpha Ocean Resources Bhd.
“The facility, to be built in Sungai Lang, is part of a 10-year project that includes the development of a new landing port for large vessels plying the Indian Ocean, as well as a land-based fish and crab farm that will create between 2,500 and 5,000 job opportunities.
“The landing port, which will involve an initial investment of over RM100 million, is expected to be operational within a year,” MBI said.
Meanwhile, the integrated fish landing port project is a collaboration between MBI and the Sekinchan Fishing Industry Association and the Sekinchan Fishermen Association including the local fishing communities.
MBI said the project is estimated to attract investments of RM484.1 million over a 10-year period in Sabak Bernam and create over 4,000 jobs.
In the statement, MBI chief executive officer Norita Mohd Sidek said the port in Sekinchan will be equipped with a comprehensive traceability system that tracks the origin, processing, and distribution of every fish product in the facility.
The existing jetty will also be expanded to double the berthing capacity to accommodate 400 boats, which will reduce waiting time and improve efficiency.
“When completed, the project is expected to increase fishing capacity by 344 per cent and the seafood processing industry by 20 per cent in Sekinchan over the next 10 years. This means an addition of 300,000 tonnes of fish and 20,000 tonnes of seafood products processed annually, which will boost the local economy and improve our food security,” she said.
The first phase, focusing on the fisheries and processing sector, is expected to be completed in 2027.
SABDA, spearheaded by MBI, is one of three new economic development zones identified under the comprehensive First Selangor Plan (RS-1) that aims to elevate entrepreneurship and innovation among local businesses and communities, while attracting new investment opportunities into the region.
