‘Rucking’: How a workout trend with a military origin is being used for a good cause

A workout with a military origin is trending, so our Karen Drew just had to go check it out.

It’s called “rucking,” and it’s not really new.

Rucking is walking with weight on your back — a low-impact exercise based on military training workouts.

Karen caught up with a local rucker, Jason Lioy.

“It’s helped me lose 70 pounds,” Lioy said. “Six inches on my waist.”

When you put on the weighted backpack, you can burn up to three times as many calories as walking.

Lioy, 52, isn’t just rucking for the weight loss. He also does it to honor and raise money for veterans. He recently visited Normandy and rucked 33 miles.

“Every time I put a ruck on, I am putting on the weights of what veterans, active duty military are carrying for us,” Lioy said. “I have parlayed this into fundraising or raising awareness for families of veterans and also raising awareness for mental health.”

Lioy and fellow ruckers will be at the Folds of Honor Firecracker 5K in Ann Arbor on the Fourth of July. You can join them to run, walk, or try rucking.
