Want better gut health? Eat these three foods daily, 'without exception', says doctor

It’s a question we rarely ask ourselves, but one that could well change our habits: what do doctors eat to stay healthy?

Gastroenterologist Dr Joseph Salhab, who has over two million followers on his TikTok account @thestomachdoc, has revealed what he eats every day, without exception.

And his simple tips can help improve gut health, as well as overall body health – and even reduce your risk of colon cancer.

Eating these things daily improves your gut health

In a video posted online, Dr Salhab shared the three things he eats every morning as a doctor.

He said: ‘Here are three things I eat every morning as a doctor for my gut and liver health as a gastroenterologist.’

The first is berries. The doctor said: ‘I’m talking about blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries. I either eat them fresh, or if I’m on the go, I eat them freeze dried.’

Explaining why they are good for you, he said blueberries – and berries in general – are a powerful antioxidant that have also been shown to have anti-ageing and anti-cancerous properties.

Dementia and colon cancer is also reduced

This leads on to number two – which is eating a handful of mixed nuts each day. Though you should make sure they are natural, unsalted and not roasted in oil.

‘So what I do is I mix this food group with number two, which is mixed nuts,’ said Dr Salhab.

He continued: ‘I eat about a handful every morning. The bag contains walnuts, pecans, almonds, cashews, pistachios, macadamia nuts.

‘People who eat more nuts usually have better cognitive health, a lower risk of dementia and a lower risk of colon cancer.’

The third thing is drinking black coffee each morning.

Dr Salhab shared: ‘I try to use a light roast because that keeps the nutrients intact, better than a dark roast.

‘Black coffee has also been shown to help with cognitive health, cardiovascular health, liver health – especially fatty liver disease – and decreases your risk of liver cancer.’ Not doing these things already? Now’s the time to start.
