It has long been agreed upon that social media is no place to test your health. While gut health hacks and trends maybe dominating social media feeds of a lot of us these days, it is advisable you DON’T follow them. Relying on the experts’ suggestions should be the preferable way to address your gut health concerns. Dr. Saurabh Sethi, a top gastroenterologist trained at AIIMS, Harvard and Stanford, recently shared easy, practical tips on his official Instagram handle to help you improve your gut health every morning. Your gut is the gastrointestinal (GI) system, which includes your stomach and intestines. Gut health depends on keeping a balance between good and bad bacteria inside. This balance helps digestion work well and keeps your gut lining healthy.
When your gut is healthy, your digestion works better, your immune system is stronger and you even feel better mentally. So, how to start your day right? Here’s what Dr Sethi recommends!
Warm water before that cuppa coffee:
Dr. Sethi recommended starting your morning with a glass of warm water before you drink coffee. Warm water helps wake up your digestive system and encourages bowel movements. Studies show that drinking warm water can stimulate digestion and help prevent constipation.
Start your day with gentle exercises:
Adding gentle exercise like walking or yoga in the morning also helps your gut. Moving your body gets your digestive system going and can reduce bloating. Research published in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health said even light exercise can improve digestion and gut health.
High-fibre breakfast:
A high-fibre breakfast is one of the best things you can do for your gut. Fibre feeds the good bacteria in your intestines, helping keep things moving smoothly. Adding protein supports muscle health and keeps you feeling full longer. A balanced breakfast with fibre and protein can reduce hunger and improve digestion, according to studies from the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
Don’t use your phone while eating:
Dr. Sethi warned against scrolling on your phone while eating. When you’re distracted, your digestion can slow down and stress levels rise, harming your gut health. If you follow mindful eating by focusing on your food, it can improve digestion and help your body absorb nutrients better.
Sugary cereals can harm your gut:
Avoid sugary cereals that can upset your gut bacteria.
Get some Vitamin D:
Get some morning sunlight for Vitamin D, which supports gut and overall health.
Try psyllium husk for bowel movement:
If you’re constipated, consider psyllium husk, a natural fibre supplement that helps regulate bowel movements.
Do a ‘poop check’:
Do a quick daily ‘poop check’, regular bowel movements are a good sign your gut is healthy.
