Becoming Christy Martin was quite the task for actress Sydney Sweeney. Known by many as one of the sex symbols in Hollywood, the actress had to undergo some serious changes and a big workout regimen to portray the former female boxer.
While we may not see her as the super-athletic type, she does have a sporting background, which may have helped her transition into the role. Christy competed as a boxer for over 20 years, claiming the super welterweight female title in 2009. She was the first woman inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame.

Portraying the character of Christy required Sydney to dedicate her time to the gym. In a recent chat with actor Ethan Hawke as part of Variety’s Actors on Actors series, the actress explained her training routine for this film. “I was working out twice a day, every single day. I put on 35 pounds,” said Sydney.

While for some that sounds extremely demanding and painful, Sydney says she enjoyed the journey. The Euphoria star adds that boxing is not exactly foreign territory for her. “I grew up kickboxing,” she revealed. Because of this, she wanted to find a role that was more physical. When her agent showed her the script for Christy, she says that she was bawling her eyes out halfway through her read.
She may have enjoyed the journey and playing the character, but audiences and critics didn’t seem to approve of the film. Christy was one of the lowest-grossing movies at the box office in its opening weekend. Meanwhile, Sydney failed to secure a Golden Globe nomination for her acting, a notable snub according to some journalists.
The opening weekend of Christy collected just over $1 million at the box office. It premiered at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF) in September.
