Embracing a Mediterranean diet all year round could offer numerous health advantages. With roots tracing back to the 20th-century, this diet promotes lessening refined sugars and bulking up on plant-based foods.
This translates to an ample intake of veggies, fruit, legumes, nuts, grains, and beneficial fats such as olive oil. Fresh research now proposes that feasting the Mediterranean way may bolster memory and slash dementia risks.
Now, a full time gut health scientist has revealed what he eats in a day following a Mediterranean diet. Manchester-based Jordan Haworth, who goes by @mrguthealth on social media, has a Masters in Clinical Research and shares nutritional advice – mainly involving the often pesky gut area – with his hundreds of thousands of online followers.
Last week, Jordan shared his day following the Med diet. He started of his day with a beetroot and ginger energy shot before moving on to his “go-to” breakfast – granola with Greek yoghurt and honey.
“Did you know that honey helps the good bacteria in yoghurt to survive through your gut?” Jordan said, before adding: “I’m now trying to incorporate walnuts and green tea daily because med diet studies show that polyphenols in them might be particularly good for your gut.”
Dinner was leftover lasagne which he made a fresh salad to go with. He took the opportunity to tell foodies: “Remember, gut health is about what you can add rather than what you can take away.”
The health specialist went on to “kill two birds with one stone” by having some fruit whilst on a post-dinner walk. Finally, for dinner, he got his fatty fish serving which he sprinkled with EVOO seasoning – a type of Italian seasoning.
He also added some herbs. As the fish only took around 20 minutes to cook, Jordan whipped up a quick salsa while it was in the oven.
Users took to the comment section to ask Jordan a few questions, including whether the granola was home made or shop bought.
Jordan replied: “I sometimes make it but I’m lazy so mostly buy in shop. This is Deliciously Ella, I also like Bio&Me!”
Another asked: “Do you recommend Kefir or natural yoghurt more for gut health?” to which Jordan got back: “Honestly, both. I like to mix kefir into the Greek yoghurt for an extra dose of microbes”.
