Dark chocolate is often hailed as a guilt-free treat, thanks largely to its flavour and high antioxidant levels. But did you know that these indulgences are also good for your gut health. With a cocoa content of more than 70 percent, dark chocolates are loaded with nutrients like flavonoids, polyphenols, and fibre that promote a healthy gut microbiome, unlike the sweetened milk chocolates.
“Good gut health is key to everything: from digestion and immunity to your mood and overall health. Dark chocolates, which are loaded with nutrients, are low in sugar content and help boost metabolism,” says Dr Rashmi Khanna, a Pune-based nutritionist and gut health coach.
A number of studies have confirmed that regular consumption of chocolates, particularly the dark variety, leads to a more balanced gut microbiota and improved gut function.
