Ascension St. Vincent is offering free brain health screenings to help people 65 and older take charge of their cognitive health.
INDIANAPOLIS — As we grow older, changes in memory and cognition can leave many people wondering: Is this normal aging — or something more serious?
For this month’s Check Up 13, Ascension St. Vincent is offering free brain health screenings to help people 65 and older take charge of their cognitive health. These simple assessments can provide clarity, peace of mind, and a helpful baseline for the future.
Is it just a “Senior Moment” or something more?
Occasionally forgetting a word or misplacing your keys is usually nothing to worry about. But according to Dr. Kent Berry, a neuropsychologist with Ascension St. Vincent, there are certain signs that might indicate a deeper concern.
“Where I would start to get concerned is if things that once felt familiar or routine now feel more difficult,” Berry explained.
“If a route to the store no longer feels automatic, or a recipe you’ve made for years is suddenly hard to follow, those are red flags. That suggests it’s time to look into this more.”
Understanding Dementia: Early awareness makes a difference
Dr. Staci Hollar, a geriatrician at Ascension St. Vincent’s Center for Healthy Aging, says dementia is more than occasional forgetfulness.
“Dementia is a progressive cognitive decline that affects daily functioning,” she said. “It’s an umbrella term with many forms — Alzheimer’s being the most common. While family history increases risk, it doesn’t guarantee you’ll develop it.”
Why get screened?
Even if you’re not experiencing major issues, a cognitive screening can be a valuable tool.
“We’ve gotten great feedback from patients who say the screening helped them feel reassured when their results were normal,” Dr. Hollar added.
“And if something does show up, it gives them and their loved ones a chance to plan — while things are still mild and manageable — for the kind of care they want in the future.”
