What is brain fog?
Brain fog is much more than the occasional forgetfulness or fuzzy-headedness we all experience when we’re tired, or stressed. It’s a chronic state of mental fog, confusion, or lack of mental clarity that can affect your ability to perform even simple daily tasks such as driving or working. Needless to say, it can impact our quality of life. Although not a medical disorder, it can be a symptom of something worth treating (Images: Canva)

Symptoms of brain fog
Brain fog could often be a symptom of other medical or neurological conditions, including multiple sclerosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, fibromyalgia, lupus and rheumatoid arthritis, depression and anxiety. But when it becomes chronic or progresses over time, it can be a sign of a more serious health issue. Leaving it unattended can result in low productivity, relationships problems, and many other related issues. Knowing when brain fog is more than a mere annoyance is important to take prompt action.

Never ignore constant brain fog
Dr Dipankar Das, a Delhi-based neurologist who specialises in cognitive well-being, says that constant brain fog shouldn’t be ignored. “Your brain is always sending you messages about your health. By looking at levels of fog that linger, you can find out anything from hormonal imbalances to neurological diseases. If you can identify and treat the underlying cause early, you can avoid long-term complications.” Here are eight signs that needs immediate intervention.

Severe memory lapses
It is normal to forget where you placed something, but if you can’t recall recent conversations, appointments you scheduled not long ago, or names of people you recognise immediately, don’t take it lightly. Memory loss that doesn’t get better should be evaluated by a doctor. Begin to write down problems with memory to discuss with your doctor.

Difficulty concentrating on simple tasks
If reading a page of text, following a recipe or completing basic work tasks seems unthinkable, your brain fog is beyond what is considered normal distractibility. If you continue to struggle, break tasks down into smaller steps, and consult your doctor.

Sudden onset of confusion
Sudden onset of brain fog without a known cause may indicate an underlying neurological condition or metabolic issue. If these symptoms are also accompanied by a rash, speak to your doctor immediately.

Accompanied by physical symptoms
If your brain fog is accompanied with dizziness, headaches, blurry vision or fatigue, it could be a symptom of thyroid dysfunction, diabetes, or even autoimmune diseases. Get a blood test and consult a doctor.

Interfering with daily life
When brain fog keeps you from holding up your end of a relationship, showing up at work or finding the words to express yourself in the moment, it’s not just an annoyance — it’s a warning sign.

Worsening over time
Brain fog that doesn’t get better with rest, hydration, or even after addressing other lifestyle factors could be symptom of a progressive condition and get medical help immediately.

Mood changes alongside fog
A combination of brain fog and irritability (or depression or anxiety) could be a symptom of hormonal imbalance, nutrient deficiency or some other serious mental health issue. Get yourself evaluated medically and psychologically.

Not improving with lifestyle adjustments
If the brain fog continues even after you’ve improved your sleep habits, cut time in front of screens, started exercising regularly and drinking more water, it means there is a deeper health problem at play. Have a professional perform tests. (Disclaimer: This article, including health and fitness advice, only provides generic information. Don’t treat it as a substitute for qualified medical opinion.
