Eating Clean: Delicious, easy snacks to support better sleep

PHOENIX (AZFamily)Registered dietitian Jamie Miller, with Village Health Clubs & Spas, joined Good Morning Arizona for some smart meals to help you get better sleep. These recipes include everything from trail mix to delicious deli roll-ups!

Cherry Almond Yogurt Parfait

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • ½ cup cottage cheese
  • Natural sweetener of choice to taste: stevia, monk fruit, honey, or maple syrup
  • ⅛ tsp vanilla or almond extract
  • ½ cup frozen tart cherries, defrosted
  • 1 tbsp dark chocolate, stevia sweetened if desired
  • 1 tbsp slivered almonds

In a small bowl, combine all ingredients other than the chocolate and almonds, and mix unless combined. In a microwave safe bowl, melt the chocolate chips. Pour chocolate over the yogurt bowl, then sprinkle with the almonds. Place in the freezer until the chocolate hardens, about 15 minutes. Enjoy!

Sleepy Time Trail Mix

Ingredients:

  • ⅓ cup goji berries
  • ⅓ cup dried tart cherries
  • 1 cup nuts of choice (almonds, pistachios, pumpkin seed, walnuts, cashews, etc)
  • ⅓ cup dark chocolate chip

In a mason jar, quart size bag, or Tupperware, add all the trail mix ingredients and stir or shake to combine. Enjoy a palmful as desired.

Chocolate Covered Bananas

Ingredients:

  • 3 bananas
  • 1 cup dark chocolate chips, or stevia sweetened chocolate for sugar free
  • 1-3 tsp coconut oil
  • Toppings of choice: nuts, seeds, shredded coconut, nut butter, etc

Peel the bananas, then slice them in half and insert a popsicle stick into the cut end. Lay the bananas on a piece of parchment paper or wax paper and freeze for at least 2 hours. Place the chocolate and coconut oil in a cup deep enough to dip the bananas in.

Heat in 20 second increments in the microwave until chocolate is completely melted. Then dip the frozen banana into the melted chocolate and twirl to remove any excess. Sprinkle on any toppings while the chocolate is still wet, then place on a piece of parchment paper or wax paper and allow the chocolate to fully harden. Place back into the freezer until ready to eat.

Turkey & Avocado or Cheese Roll Ups & Crackers

Ingredients:

  • Sliced turkey
  • Sliced cheese or sliced avocado
  • Whole grain crackers

Lay out your turkey slice flat. Then, lay cheese, avocado and bell peppers (if desired) across the turkey slice. Roll up and enjoy!
