Filmmaker and choreographer Farah Khan is grabbing headlines for her incredible weight transformation of late. The 60-year-old, who has publicly stated she does not like “going to a gym,” has found unconventional ways to lose weight without compromising on her love for food.
Her two main weight loss secrets are her fitness and diet routines, both of which she changed from her original belief of not moving much. Recently, Farah’s fitness trainer, Yogesh Bhateja, revealed that she, who never wanted to come down from her 35th-floor penthouse, has started using the stairs instead of a lift.

What does Farah do for her weight loss?

Apart from using the stairs to climb up and down her house, which does help her lose significant calories in a day, Farah has also started hydro workouts early in the morning.

Also known as pool exercises or aquatic workouts, hydro workouts include walking in the pool, jumping jacks, and black wall glide. It helps utilise the properties of water for exercise, offering low-impact, full-body benefits, which can easily be done in a pool or using specialised equipment like Bosu hydro balls or Hydrow rowing machines. According to experts, these are particularly beneficial for those with mobility restrictions or joint pain, as the water provides resistance and buoyancy, reducing stress on joints.
According to studies, those who have knee osteoarthritis found relief in pain with water-based exercises, as it helped them move better with greater strength than other land-based exercises. Water-based workouts also help improve your balance, strength, and lung capacity, as walking in water is said to be more effective in improving leg muscle mass than walking on land.

When her trainer initially put her on a strict fitness schedule, Farah got bored walking on the treadmill and so, she started climbing stairs.

However, by the end of her training period, Khan felt bored. She then resorted to stair climbing. “There was a time when she said she was getting bored, which was obvious. So, we tweaked her gym schedule to accommodate climbing stairs instead of walking on a treadmill, which tends to get boring. The first day, I remember, we climbed only two floors. The idea was to try and add one floor every day. Last we counted, we climbed 28 floors. That’s how she got transformed,” Bhateja said in a YouTube podcast.

Climbing stairs is a wonderful, no-cost form of physical activity that not only makes you burn calories but also improves the risk of cardiometabolic diseases in adults. It improves markers of blood pressure, cholesterol levels, diabetes, obesity, and blood sugar levels.

A diet that made all the difference

While workouts have played a significant role, a major part of Farah’s transformation also came from her dietary discipline. Bhateja revealed that while she did not follow any fad diets or extreme food restrictions, Farah was totally focused on eating “limited, yet correct meals.”
Eating protein-rich breakfasts, Farah also incorporates salads for fibre and satiety and avoids processed sugary foods. Her meals are generally light and focused on whole foods. Bhateja said one of the most important points to note was that Farah finishes off her dinner by 7:30 pm, which is one of the best ways to enhance metabolism and complete your weight loss goal.
