If you take prazosin hydrochloride to manage your blood pressure, you may want to take a closer look at the bottle.
According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, 580,844 bottles of the blood pressure medication have been recalled for having high levels of chemicals that could cause cancer. The impacted drugs are manufactured by Teva Pharmaceuticals USA and involve various strengths of the capsules: 1, 2 and 5 milligram doses.

The culprit is N-nitroso Prazosin impurity C: N-nitrosamine impurities are a class of chemicals that potentially cause cancer. These chemicals can be introduced to drugs during the manufacturing process or while in storage.
In addition to treating high blood pressure (or hypertension), prazosin hydrochloride can also be prescribed to help with nightmares and other sleep issues for those with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).
The recall began Oct. 7 and on Oct. 24 was labelled a Class II, which means the drug “may cause temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences or where the probability of serious adverse health consequences is remote.”
