Gut doctor says make sure bananas aren't ripe when you eat them

A gut doctor has shared what foods you need to include in your diet to aid digestion – and it comes down to just four. Dr Saurabh Sethi, a gastroenterologist trained at Harvard, said there are four foods in particular that he says we all need to prioritise.

First up, kiwis. He said: “Eat kiwis for your digestion because they contain actinidin, which is an enzyme that helps break down protein.”

Next on the list of dietary essentials is papaya. Dr Sethi said: “Eat papaya for your stomach, because papain supports digestion and reduces bloating.”

Unusually, the medical expert also suggests eating slightly green bananas, as this helps your gut microbiome due to the fact that they are high in resistant starch that supports healthy gut bacteria, as well as keeping blood sugar stable.

Finally, Dr Sethi suggests eating guava to aid in digestion. Guava is packed with fibre and vitamin C, both of which help support smooth and regular bowel movements.

Previously, the gastroenterologist shared what superfoods to eat to help clean your gut, with chia, flax and basil seeds all serving an important role in gut health.
