Tracking down your calorie consumption to the last bit can be very tough. Some mobile apps can help serve as your fitness diary and calorie counter, but their accuracy is still largely in doubt for most people. Let’s see how useful these apps are.
“Although they’re not perfect, calorie tracking apps can be a helpful tool for managing your weight or analysing your dietary intake,” said Kanikka Malhotra, Consultant Dietitian & Diabetes Educator.
First and foremost, the app’s food database must be trustworthy because inaccurate calorie counts might have a big influence on the outcomes. Then, the user’s accuracy in logging in the correct portion size is also very important.
But is calorie counting really that necessary?
It’s not necessary for everyone, but for people trying to manage a particular health condition or reduce weight, calorie tracking can be a helpful tool. However, counting calories on its own ignores the significance of macro and micronutrients for general health. Calorie requirements are influenced by individual metabolic rates, and exercise records can be inaccurate because of things like time and intensity of activity.

Many people also find success with methods such as mindful or intuitive eating. Intuitive eating emphasizes listening to your body’s hunger and fullness cues rather than adhering to strict rules or numbers and mindful eating involves focusing on the eating experience, savoring flavors, and being present, which can help regulate food intake.
Kanikka also recommends the plate method, which involves dividing your plate into portions of protein, carbohydrates, and vegetables can help balance meals without calorie counting.
Finally it’s important to note that while calorie tracking can be an important tool, it often becomes a source of stress and demotivation. Obsessing over numbers can lead to unhealthy relationships with food, and rigid restrictions can backfire. It’s essential to remember that true health and well-being go beyond numbers. A balanced diet, regular physical activity, adequate sleep, and managing stress are equally important.
