Local Spotlight: Importance of Brain Health

FRESNO, Calif. (KFSN) — In this Local Spotlight, the California Department of Aging shares the importance of brain health across the lifespan, especially as people transition from middle age to older adulthood. It highlights the growing prevalence of Alzheimer’s and dementia.

Key risk factors include age, untreated hearing loss, depression, social isolation, and chronic conditions like diabetes and hypertension.

It also underscores the vital role of caregivers and the need for them to care for themselves.

California’s Dementia Care Aware program is featured as a proactive initiative offering training for healthcare providers to improve dementia screening and support, especially for Medi-Cal members. Free resources are available statewide through local Area Agencies on Aging.
