Mercy Health — Lorain urges caution with hot temps, diet trends

Mercy Health is warning that common summer diet trends, like keto and intermittent fasting, may pose unexpected health risks — especially during periods of high heat and humidity, according to a news release.

While many people turn to these diets to jump-start wellness goals, experts say the combination of restricted eating and extreme temperatures can cause problems such as dizziness, low energy and heat exhaustion.

“Carb-restricted diets like keto reduce the body’s stored water,” explained Dr. Bushra Siddiqui, primary care physician at Mercy Health — Sheffield Primary Care, in the release. “If you’re also losing fluids from sweating, you can quickly become dehydrated without realizing it.”

Likewise, fasting can prevent people from drinking enough water or getting nutrients during the hottest times of day, placing added stress on the body, Siddiqui said.

“Symptoms like headaches, cravings and fatigue are often blamed on hunger — but they’re frequently signs that your body just needs water,” she said. “Staying hydrated is critical, especially in the summer heat.”

Mercy Health — Lorain shares these tips for safe summer dieting:

• Drink water regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty

• Supplement with electrolytes when following low-carb or fasting plans

• Focus on hydrating foods such as watermelon, strawberries and oranges

• Limit alcohol and caffeine, which can dehydrate you faster

• Avoid fasting or vigorous exercise between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m.

• Pay attention to early warning signs of dehydration

Watch out for symptoms including dry mouth, confusion, nausea or dark urine — these can signal a need for medical care.

Mercy Health’s walk-in care clinics are equipped to treat heat-related issues quickly and without an appointment, the release said.

“Don’t ignore how your body feels,” Siddiqui said. “If you’re not feeling right while dieting or exercising in the summer heat, walk-in care is a smart, convenient option for getting checked out.”

Mercy Health strives to quality, community-centered care for Lorain County and surrounding areas, the release said. From walk-in visits to primary specialty care, Mercy Health is committed to keeping you well year-round.
