A startup called Sleep.ai said today it has raised $5.5 million in venture capital funding to try and help everyone get a better night’s rest by leveraging what it says is the world’s most in-depth “sleep intelligence” platform.
Today’s round was led by Treasure Coast Ventures and saw participation from Nurture Ventures, the Harvard Business School Alumni Angels of Greater New York, Supermoon Capital and several angel investors.
Sleep.ai, officially known as Consumer Sleep Solutions LLC, is the creator of an artificial intelligence sleep platform that’s designed to generate advanced insights for third-party products and services, as well as its own consumer applications. The goal is to help ensure people get a satisfactory night’s slumber and improve their overall health.
It’s well known that having a good snooze is important for our health and well being. Scientific studies show that getting adequate sleep plays a vital role in preventing chronic diseases and reducing healthcare costs. According to one study by RAND Research, sleep deprivation costs the global economy more than $411 billion annually as a result of lost productivity, accidents and health problems.
Despite the importance of shuteye, access to clinical care remains extremely limited. According to Sleep.ai, there’s just one board-certified sleep specialist available to serve every 43,000 U.S. patients with obstructive sleep apnea. As a result, millions of people who struggle to get enough sleep go without timely diagnosis or treatment.
Sleep.ai thinks its technology has real potential to make a difference. It says that by leveraging the scale of AI, it can deliver personalized sleep insights and help improve outcomes, transforming the world’s largest validated sleep dataset into actionable, science-backed guidance. With these insights, it wants to empower healthcare providers, wellness companies and others to help improve outcomes on a massive scale.
Sleep.ai offers its own consumer sleeping app, known as SleepScore, which uses patented sonar technology and science-based coaching to help people doze off faster, stay asleep for longer, and wake up feeling more refreshed. In addition to its own products, Sleep.ai offers an application programming interface that delivers real-time, science-backed sleep data and recommendations to wellness platforms, digital health apps and other connected devices.
The company also operates a research and development lab that’s focused on studying sleeping patterns and validating scientific methods for improving sleep. It runs a reimbursed “sleep improvement program,” paying volunteers to wear its devices so their sleep can be monitored. Through more than 250 of these studies, it has obtained more than 800 million hours of proprietary sleep data, making it the largest dataset of its kind.
Sleep.ai founder and Chief Executive Colin Lawlor said the problem with sleep is that it’s highly complex and personal, with numerous variables affecting someone’s ability to get a proper rest. “The accuracy and scale of our data are key and the computational complexity becomes revolutionary,” he promised. “Our AI doesn’t just analyze sleep, it interprets data in a way no human could, turning massive datasets into meaningful insights that drive better health outcomes.”
Sleep.ai now intends to accelerate the commercialization of its data-based sleep intelligence, primarily by expanding its partner integrations in the healthcare, wellness, lifestyle and insurance industries. One of its first partners is Therabody Inc., a wellness technology provider known for devices like the Theragun, which is designed to relieve muscle tension, reduce pain, and improve circulation. By partnering with Sleep.ai, Therabody has been able to expand its offerings with a series of AI-powered soothing goggles designed to help people doze off faster.
“Sleep.ai is operating ahead of the curve,” said Timothy Roberts, Therabody’s vice president of science and innovation. “It saw and acted on the importance of validating consumer solutions before many saw the evolution of consumer understanding and behavior. Without Sleep.ai it would not have been possible for Therabody to enter the sleep category with the rigorous validation we pride ourselves on.”
