LAS CRUCES, N.M. (KRQE) – The New Mexico State men’s basketball program began summer practices this week. This marks the start of year three for head coach Jason Hooten.

This season, it will be a new-looking Aggies roster. NMSU lost 13 players following the end of last season — seven graduated seniors and six transfer portal departures. The current roster consists of 11 new players and only two returners. Nine of the 11 joined NMSU via the transfer portal.

Coach Hooten said the massive roster turnaround he had to construct in his first year prepared him for something like this. “I still think that the culture has kind of been built and in place and expectations of the next group coming in,” he said.

NMSU is coming off a 17-15 overall record and a 10-8 record inside Conference USA.

The 2025-2026 Conference USA schedule was revealed on Friday. The Aggies open the CUSA portion of their schedule at home against Sam Houston State on December 21.
