Michelle Obama’s Workout Routine

Michelle Obama recently shared a message aimed at those who dread getting up to go to the gym but end up feeling great afterward. “Working out doesn’t always feel good in the moment.

But once I’ve done it, I’m always glad I went to the gym,” she wrote, alongside a photo of herself performing a weighted lunge.

This exercise, a favorite among her followers, stands out for its effectiveness.

Lunges simultaneously engage the quadriceps, glutes, calves, and core, combining both aerobic and anaerobic effort to help strengthen and tone the entire body.

One of their greatest advantages is versatility — they can be done with or without weights. In Obama’s case, she uses a medicine ball to intensify the movement.

There are several variations — such as jumping lunges, step lunges, or alternating lunges — and the former First Lady prefers the latter.

To perform a lunge correctly:

  • Take a wide step forward with one foot.
  • Bend the front knee, keeping your weight on the heel. The back heel may lift slightly.
  • Hold your balance in that position.
  • Push off the front foot to return to the starting stance.

How Often Should You Train?

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends that adults engage in 150 to 300 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity per week, or 75 to 150 minutes of vigorous activity — or a combination of both — to achieve similar health benefits.

Additionally, the WHO advises incorporating muscle-strengthening activities of moderate or high intensity at least twice a week, targeting all major muscle groups, as this provides further health benefits.
