Growing up, we were often told that
a healthy breakfast had to have orange juice. The same goes for
cereal. But it turns out that although fruits are considered
healthy, some of them can be bad for your health if you have too
much. According to a gut specialist, there are some fruits that are
better for your health and your kids’ health than others.
These fruits are great for your gut health
Dr Steven Gundry wrote a piece for
CNBC, explaining which fruits are the best for your
gut health. While fruits give you the vitamins and supplements you
need, they also contain a lot of sugar. This natural sugar can
become dangerous for your health if you have too much. According to
the heart surgeon, you should eat low-sugar, higher-polyphenol
fruits. He calls them ‘nature’s candy’.
These include citrus fruits, such as grapefruit, tangerine and
kumquats. They don’t contain that much sugar, and they are packed
with vitamin C. They also contain polyphenol, which support your
gut health. You should have them with the white pith, because it’s
the part that contains the most nutrients.
It turns out
olives also work miracles on your gut health. They’re low in
sugar, and high in healthy fats. You can nibble on a few olives
while you’re making dinner.

How you can add them to your diet
Kumquats can be eaten whole. You don’t even need to peel them.
They can be easily added to your salads or stir-fries. Berries are
also great for your health. Blueberries, raspberries and
strawberries are the best. You can add them to your daily smoothie,
or have them with greek yoghurt. It is best to eat them when
they’re in season.
Pomegranates are the best. Despite their sweet taste, they are
relatively low in sugar. Their crunchy seeds also add fibre to your
diet, which is great for your gut and metabolism. And last but not
least, avocados are the doctor’s favourite. He eats one every day.
You can have avocado on toast, add them to your salads, or even
smash them to have as guacamole.
Avocados contain almost no sugar, they’re rich in nonsaturated
fats, and packed with potassium and fibre. It seems an avocado a
day keeps the doctor away after all.
5 FAQ about Dr Gundry’s findings
1. Why aren’t all fruits equally good for gut
health?
Because while fruits provide essential vitamins, many are high in
natural sugars. Eating too much sugar—even from fruit—can
negatively affect your health. Low-sugar, polyphenol-rich fruits
are better for gut support.
2. Which fruits does Dr. Steven Gundry recommend for
better gut health?
He suggests citrus fruits (grapefruit, tangerines, kumquats),
olives, berries (blueberries, raspberries, strawberries),
pomegranates, and avocados due to their low sugar and high nutrient
content.
3. Why is the white pith in citrus fruits
important?
The pith contains the highest concentration of nutrients and
polyphenols, which can support gut health.
4. How can these recommended fruits be added to a
daily diet?
Eat kumquats whole, toss citrus segments or olives into salads, add
berries to smoothies or yoghurt, include pomegranate seeds for
fibre, and use avocado on toast, in salads, or as guacamole.
5. What makes avocados stand out among gut-friendly
fruits?
They contain almost no sugar, are rich in healthy fats, potassium,
and fibre, and can easily be eaten daily—Dr. Gundry’s personal
routine.
