There is always a new health trend popping up. The latest one is called fibermaxxing.
If you have not heard of it, fibermaxxing is all about eating loads of fibre to help with gut health and digestion. It follows the big protein craze that had us all adding extra scoops to smoothies and searching for protein bars everywhere.
On the surface, fibermaxxing sounds great. Most of us do not eat enough fibre. A good amount can help keep things moving, prevent constipation, reduce bloating and feed our friendly gut bacteria.
But before you rush to stock up on chia seeds, there is a bit more to it.
Can too much fibre cause issues?
Nutritionist Rob Hobson warns that going from low levels of fibre to a very high intake could throw your body into shock. It could give you bloating, gas, cramps, and even stop your body from properly absorbing minerals like iron and calcium.

If you have a particularly sensitive tummy, or IBS, you may find that too much fibre will actually make you feel worse. It’s always best to increase your fibre intake gradually, to gauge your body’s reaction.
What other trends are worth exploring?
Fibermaxxing is not the only new thing that is trending; ginger shots are also all over social media. Ginger is known for helping lower blood pressure, cholesterol, and even help reduce colds.

Having a small shot on a daily basis may feel like an extra boost. But Rob warns that ginger may also interfere with some medications, including blood thinners and diabetes medications. Always check with your GP about taking medications before adding ginger to your daily intake.
Are protein snacks really healthy?
Protein has also been a huge trend. Many people look for high-protein snacks, thinking they are healthier. But Rob says we need to look past the label.
A high-protein chocolate bar might still be full of sugar and additives. Instead of just looking at the protein content, focus on the quality of the food. Choose things like chicken, eggs and lentils rather than ultra-processed snacks.
Do what works for you
Health trends can be inspiring, but they are not always simple. It is easy to get swept up in what we see online. Remember, every family and every body is different.
Rather than copying the latest trend, take things slowly and listen to your body. A healthy meal does not need to look perfect for Instagram. It just needs to nourish you and help you keep up with the kids and everything else life throws at you.
