Could a billionaire ‘buy’ Denver? Here’s how much it would cost

DENVER (KDVR) — If Jeff Bezos or Elon Musk came to Denver and decided they wanted to own all of the property in it, would they be able to?

Well, unless they have a few hundred billion dollars hiding in their couch cushions that no one knows about, that might prove a bit difficult.

How much is Denver worth?

FOX31 used the assessment abstract released by the city to find out just what it would cost to buy up all the property in Denver. This abstract includes the value of all the real and personal property in the city, as calculated by the Denver Assessor’s Office.

However, it doesn’t include any streets or government properties.

The total market value of the properties are calculated, and this value is used to determine their assessed value, which is then used to determine how much the owner has to pay in property taxes.

If you add up all of the residential, commercial, industrial and vacant properties in the city, the grand total comes out to just over $235 billion.

The biggest chunk of this — around 77% — comes in the form of residential properties, which are worth an estimated $182.6 billion. The bulk of those are single-family homes, which are worth around $116.9 billion.

There is also around $29.4 billion of exempt property in the city. This includes things like city, federal and state government-owned property, as well as things owned by religious and charitable entities.

Could anyone actually buy Denver?

No one person in the world could afford to outright buy all of the property in Denver for $235 billion, according to the Forbes 2024 billionaires ranking.

The richest person, at least as of 2024, was Bernard Arnault and his family, which were worth an estimated $233 billion. Arnault is the CEO of LVMH, which is a luxury goods company.

Still, he would be $2 billion short. Elon Musk, the second-richest man according to the list, was worth an estimated $195 billion, meaning the Tesla founder would have to find an extra $40 billion before he could own all the property in the Mile High City.

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos was worth around $194 billion, making him the third-richest person, according to Forbes.

So even if, hypothetically, Arnault or Musk wanted to buy Denver, they wouldn’t be able to without joining forces with someone else.
