Housing crisis is a national emergency — and should be treated as such

As the next general election looms, housing is unquestionably the big issue. As an independent local election candidate scanning the electoral register, it becomes clear that restricted access to housing transcends all social classes. Very well-to-do people who are older than me display the housing patterns of married couples with young children.

A highly successful retired partner from a leading accountancy practice in his mid-seventies isn’t living with just his wife — the household comprises four people with the family name (presumably including two adult children). The household of a judge in his late sixties comprises five sharing the same surname. Maybe the electoral register isn’t being kept up to date, as children leave the household, but it would be odd for that to persist
